Since we're not able to see your problem first-hand, I can only suggest that your peas may have one of the following diseases;
1) PEA ENATION MOSAIC; Is a virus disease that is transmitted by aphids (small green bugs). Leaves can become mottled, crinkled, or stunted and you might see white flecking on the leaves and pods. Pods can also become badly distorted.
Cure: Control aphids with insecticides such as Safer's Soap.
Plant resistant varieties early to avoid aphid infestation. Use clean seeds and rotate locations yearly.
2) POWDERY MILDEW: A powdery white fungus grows on the leaf and stem. Plants are dwarfed if infested early.
CURE: There aren't many fungicides that can be safely applied to peas that will control powdery mildew. You can try using sulfur OR potassium bicarbonate OR use some baking soda and spray every 7 days
1 tablespoon of baking soda
½ teaspoon of liquid soap
1 gallon of water
Plant early-maturing or resistant varieties. Spring seedings have less mildew problems than autumn plantings.
Hope this helps solve your problem. GOOD LUCK!

You're talking about two different types of plants. "Sweetpea" as we know it here is a flower, seeds not edible.
Sugarsnap is an edible podded pea and grows best in cooler climates, early in the year in the States.
My guess is that it's your sugarsnaps that are crispy critters because your climate is unsuitable for them, or you planted them at the wrong time for your area. How hot is it in Australia right now?
If you did plant sweetpea flowers, please don't eat the peas!
