There is a white substance with small white mushrooms growing...?

Question:I have a 3 foot house plant- not sure what kind it is- but it has a fairly thick trunk (you can put your hand around it) and long thin green leaves. Recently, the soil sprouted a white 'goo'. upon further inspection, there are small white mushrooms growing out of the goo.
Is my plant in danger? If I just scoop out the white substance will that solve the problem?
Help! I love the plant (its name is Harry) and I would like to keep him alive and kicking for as long as possible!

Thanks!

Answers:
I don't think there are any bad soil fungi that make mushrooms. There must be some good organic matter in your plant's soil for the fungi to eat- this will release nutrients that will actually make your plant grow better!

You need to treat it with an anti fungal. The white stuff will eventually go away.
