Are the Armadillidium vulgare damaging my garden?
Question:I mean my garden looks good, but I have notice that I got plenty of them now.. I do not know if I should considere them as a plague or are they part of the nature and most likely good for my garden. Could you please tell me , what should I do? if I should do something about them.
Answers:
They are part of Nature!! The number that you see will rise and fall with the seasons. They are the scavengers of the garden!!
Good Luck!!
No, they eat decaying roots and plants, not healthy ones. They actually help your garden.
Armadillos rooting in your yard are a sign that some things are going on in your yard below the soil that aren't good. They are looking for (and finding) pests that like to feed on the roots of plants and turf.
They are sometimes an early warning sign that you need to look more closely at the health of your garden or yard.
They won't bother a healthy area because there is nothing there to attract them--they like grubs and other subterranean creatures.
I would be very concerned if I were to see a number of them in my area. A good fence can keep them out but it should go down into the ground at least 12-14 inches. Your other option is to get a trapper to put out live traps and remove them from your property. Do not try to do this yourself.
I remember those from many years ago gardening when I was growing up. Always thought they were a little icky but we never did anything to get rid of them like we did for other bugs and worms.
