How do I fill a large gulch in my friend's lawn?

Question:I'm getting married in September at my friend's house, in the backyard. The yard is great except for one thing: there's a big dip in the lawn. I'd say it's about 18 inches long and maybe 2 inches deep; not horrible, but definitely enough for someone to trip on or a chair to sink into. It's covered by grass, so at least it's not just a big muddly hole, but I need to level it out. What's the best way to do this? Can I cut around the grass, and peel it back and fill the hole, then cover it back up? It seems like the best thing would be to somehow use the grass that's already there, rather than replace it with sod, which would really stick out at the wedding. Any ideas?

Answers:
You can "scalp" the grass that is currently around the top since it is not that large of a hole, and set it aside. Then fill the hole with top soil and replace the sod scalp you created.

Hey, without harming the grass fill the hole and let the grass do the rest of the covering:P

Hope this helps

I am not a gardener so this is all i can come up with
Good idea to cut out the sod and reuse it. Use a square shovel or pick axe (Maddox) (whatever you have--it's such a small area) to score around where you want to remove the grass--go deep so your shovel goes down lower than the grass roots. Then gradually start rolling the sod onto itself and use your shovel to gently loosen the grass roots and keep on doing this until you have a nice roll. Lift your roll out and put it somewhere in the shade. You don't want it to dry out, so you could cover it with an old towel or something that is porous cuz you don't want to bake the sod either with plastic. You'll need some top soil from the garden center--I'd guess 6 or 8 bags, more or less. Guess you should get that before you start, or maybe not--you decide. Pour the soil in your valley and walk on or thump on it with a board to tamp it down (a tamper would be good to use, but don't buy one). Make sure the soil is packed tightly, but a bit below the grass line because you need some space to accommodate the height of the sod. Put the sod back, broken pieces of all, and gently tap it down, too. Water the sod and make sure it doesn't dry out, but you don't want to drown it either. Check it at least once a day. Water in the a.m. if you can. You can do it. Good luck.
