Advice for refinishing a Faded Flying V?
Question:How would I go about refinishing the whole thing including the neck. It seems to be stained wood with some clear coats, would that make the process any different from a guitar with a normal finish? I want to go from the worn cherry color to flat black and I don't really want the glossy lacquer finish. Don't bother telling me to have a professional repaint it, it would cost more than the guitar is worth.
Answers:
Use varnish remover to get to the wood
Lightly sand it
Spray paint flat black
Paint with flat black grill or appliance paint, or maybe even the flat DIY chalk board paint might turn out nice
Then use a satin clear coat it will still appear flat but will be protected
Let it dry for 2 days before you touch it!
Then comes the fun part
Reassemble
dude, its a FLYING V! why refinish this beautiful guitar?? thats awesome!!
DUDE, ARE YOU SICK OR SOMETHING? NOBODY WITHOUT KNOW- HOW SHOULD EVER TOUCH THE FINISH ON AN INSTUMENT..A "V"..YOU ARE CRAZY MAN!....CALL IN THE PRO'S.!!!...WHAT A BOOB !!GUITAR'S ARE SACRED, MAN..ONLY GOD CAN CHANGE THEM..GOD AND TIME....aaaaahhhhhh!!! some people never learn...
Painted a couple of solid body electric guitars when I had my shop.
Would not touch accoustic guitars.
Think they were maple.
Had the owners remove the pickups, knobs & hardware.
Just gave them a scuff sanding then used auto primer , spotting putty & auto paint.
Flat black could be a problem though since it will show every mark like a blackboard.
If you can live w/ some shine you can get excellent results w/ just auto paint spraycans.
Just pretend it's a fender.
No pun intended.
i would go with victor.
if you own the guitar first hand, you should love the guitar with its life span. you shouldnt refinisha guitar. i had a krammer and i never wasted a single penny to restore it, instead i wasted a lot on preserving it.
the guitar has its own soul created by its user.
