Making a large clay pot fountain?
Question:I want to make a large clay pot fountain to use as a "wishing well" at my wedding reception. My idea is to use a baby pool as the base, covered with plastic liner and stones lining the bottom. Then, a wooden cover to disguise the pool would be built around and set on top. I want to stack clay pots to a height of 4-5 feet, and have the water cascade over the pots.
Can anyone tell me what materials I need and if I'd need a strong pump to get the water that high? I've already looked for plans for a fountain this large, but all I've found are projects for tabletop fountains or garden ponds. Thanks!
Answers:
Really all you are making IS a large table top fountain or a small garden pond. Take the plans/recommendations for the 2 and combine them - it should be just fine. If you have a choice between the pumps - go larger, better too much than too little - and most pumps have a regulator in which you could slow the flow.
If you have all of the materials you have mentioned all you will need is a fountain pump (Lowes or Home depot) and a length of rubber tubing (found in the plumbing section of any hardware store). Place the pump in the pool and run the tubing up through the base of the pots. Don't forget to prime the pump, or it will not work. You do this by pouring water down through the tube after the pump is running. Good Luck, and Congrats!

Here is a simple and fun water feature you can build in two afternoons. You will need:
Three pots;
#1. A large one for the bottom pool
#2. A smaller decorative pot for the upper pool
#3. One pot an appropriate size to serve as a pedestal for the smaller pot .
1/4" masonry bit
Water proof flexible adhesive. One that will work on both rubber and clay or tile.
Two pieces of rubber to cover the drain holes in pots #1 and #2.
Pea Gravel
Stones
Blue furnace filter. The cheap stuff like they carry at Lowes.
One fountain pump
Enough hose or pipe to run from the pump to the top of pot #2.
A piece of stiff hardware cloth cut to fit just inside the top of pot #2.
When shopping for the pots do a trial setup right there in the store. Put the large pot on the floor, find a smaller decorative pot that has appealing dimensions and then locate several cheap clay or plastic pots of different sizes. Turn one of the cheap pots upside down inside the large pot and set the small pot on top. Try out several combinations until you find one you like.
For pots one and two :
I used rubber scraps left over from the pond to seal the drain holes. Read and follow the directions on the adhesive, glue the rubber to the pots to cover the drain holes. It is better to use a piece that will cover the bottom of the pots and in most cases you will need to let the glue cure for several hours before adding water.
After the glue has cured cut a hole in the rubber on pot #2 large enough to accommodate the hose from the pump.
Next drill three holes in the side of pot #2. These will need to be located about one third down the side and in what will be the front.
Pot #3 will need to be drilled around the side in several places to allow water to get in. Now drill a ring of holes, close together around the bottom of the pot and tap the bottom out so that now the pot has no bottom. This is to facilitate cleaning the pump. Also drill out an area large enough for the plug on the pump to run through.
Place pot #1 in the location where you want your fountain.
Now place pot #3, wide end down, in the center of #1.
