I'm building utility shelves using 2x4's, ply wood and some deck screws. It is hard to cut the boards straight

Question:. . . with a hand saw, but a circular saw scares me as I am a novice. Is there a power saw well suited to cut 2x4's that is no so dangerous? Thanks a lot for the help.

Answers:
Circular saws are really quite safe. They are equipped with all sorts of safety guards, and even if you've never used one before, they're easy to operate. I especially recommend one since you are just working with small pieces of wood. It'll be good practice for you to use that circular saw. Just squeeze that trigger and slide across the wood! Next time you will be able to tackle your project with no fear! :-)

Try a 10" Makita chop saw.
try a jigsaw it easier to control circular saw
hey if you can rent a standard radial bench saw you can cut 2x4's very easy and your hands don't need to be near the saw blade but make sure the radial saw is level and not on something tipsy just remeber to wear safety goggles you'll be fine if you think the boards are to long for you to handle then ask somebody to hold the other end while you cut or set other 2x4's at the other end to support it you should be able to rent a radial saw at a heavy duty supply store that rents backhoes or tractors good luck just remember measure twice cut once
Yes you can do it with a skil saw, most skil saw blade will just place thur a 2x4 without much trouble..just take it slow and use a new blade and it should do just fine..you can pick this type of saw up for under 40 dollars and they can be used for so many projects.
always be sure to measure twice and cut once..saves lots of wood and headaches
A chop saw or a cutoff saw is the easiest to use. Just be aware of where your fingers/hands are when you lower the boom and you will be fine!
Invest in a miter saw. Even a good one is under $100, and money well spent.

For the plywood, two strong clamps and a STRAIGHT board to guide the saw with keep those long cuts in line.
