Im installing a new fanlight. The Ceiling has a ground and two white. Which white one is actually black?

Question:I need help because the ceiling has a two wire with ground cables. The green is the ground, but unfortunately I can't remember which of the two white cables is actually the black hot wire. Can someone help?

Answers:
Has the black wire been painted over? I don't know of any cable with 2 white wires (in the US anyway).
Try to cut back the cable shield a little and you might be able to determine which one is black.

Shouldn't matter.
Ideally, if you had a test meter, you should be able measure 0 Volts between ground and the neutral, & 120 Volts between the ground and "Hot" wire with power on.

It does not really matter functionally, but there may be a code violation somewhere if you have a hot neutral in the light socket.

Be careful and good luck!
