Framing question?

Question:I would like to lay out a pergola 26' wide with the rafters 24" on center starting from the middle and working out so it is even on each end. how do i do that ?

Answers:
Find center. Measure 12" each direction. Then 24" o.c.

simple... you measure length top and bottom and divide these measurement's in half, this is your center line and you mark this because it falls in the middle of first rafter, then measure 24and 3/4 inches from this line and repeat all the way out on both sides, these additional marks are the out side Mark of rafter and place out side of rafter against mark and all rafters will be 24 on center, your center line measure both sides 3/4 inch out both sides and this places center rafter in middle, all you are doing is repeating one measurement over and over. hope this helps. source 30 year contractor
26 is an even number so the difference is only 3/4 on last rafter you can hold back on second rafter 3/8 if you like but i would lay it out from one edge to 22 7/8, 46 7/8 and so on till end that should balance both ends
