Do I need to compact the sand before filling my pool?

Question:I have put 3" of sand down and totally leveled the sand. The pool is 18 ft around and has metal walls not the blow up type. Will the water automatically compact the sand and keep level or do I need to rent a ground compactor?

Answers:
You need to rent a tamper to make the sand more compact. I have a 15ft. pool and we put sand under the pool as well but didn't tamp it! The pool was great for about 2 weeks and then the sand shifted causing our pool to have a deep end and shallow end!! We learned the hard way and had to drain our pool, use a tamper, and refill. Now it is just perfect! Good luck to you and enjoy your pool! We are in our second season with our pool and it was worth every penny!

If you leveled it well, you should be OK. Be sure there are no sharp rocks that could cut the liner. ~
You do not need to rent a ground compactor because the weight of the water will sufficiently pack the sand. You will need to be careful when laying the pool so that you do not disturb the sand. Do not wet the sand because the weight of the filled pool will not allow any air to eventually dry the sand which could become moldy.
