I'm trying to "Dryloc" basement walls and floors.?

Question:I'm having a tough time getting the old paint off of masonry brick... how critical is it to remove old paint?... I tried an orbital sander.. but not working very well... any suggestions... different tool or sander?.. please help...

Answers:
If the paint is stuck good, it should not cause a problem. Better to get it off if you can just to be sure. Try a wire brush. Perhaps even a wire wheel on an electric angle grinder.

It has been noted that UGL does not warrant the product unless all paint is removed. The problem with this is it is impossible to remove all of the paint from a non-glazed brick. Most common brick are not glazed, yours are not or the paint would come off fairly easily. The Drylock would not adhere well either.

You will have a certain amount of paint left due to penetration of the porous surface of the brick. As long as you get the surface film off, the Drylock should work, warranty or no. A wire brush is your best bet to remove the surface film.

<>From the Drylok brochure: "Old paint must be removed by wire-brushing, sand-blasting or by using other suitable means. DRYLOK® Masonry Waterproofer is warranteed over bare masonry only."

PS: If you are going to sandblast, make sure the old paint doesn't have lead in it!
Use a stiff wire brush and brush, brush and brush some more. You want to get as much of the old paint off. The Dryloc paint needs to cover as much of the area as possible. Do at least 2 coats, possibly 3 if you have enough drylock.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this task? If you are trying to prevent water, moisture or mold from seeping thru the walls u are simply throwing money away. If you are doing this for a quik fix to sell the property do as the others say and wire brush it.
Otherwise you need a professional waterproofing company to come out and fix it permenatly. The cost should be no more than about $70 lf(linear foot) be for warned there will be a heavy sales pitch before you sign and it can be very exhausting to get the right company. I am a former employee of the basement doctor and although i agree that this process works i did not agree with the sales process.
Good luck
