Can you help my toilet won't flush?

Question:Don't know why but my toilet will not flush. I have taken handle off and tryed to flush the loo with the wire that connects to plastic parts that connect to the handle, but this hasn,t been any help at all the only whater to flush is very little. Am I going to have to get a plumer in to do the job, if so will it be expencive ?.

Answers:
just fill a basin with water and throw it down.

then get someone who knows what they are doing to fix it.

Do you think it´s clogged or is it a problem with the tank? I mean, when you flush, does the water level in the bowl rise or not?

If the toilet is NOT clogged, and it´s just a problem with the actual tank flushing, you can manually flush the toilet by pouring a bucket full of water into it. But dont do that if it´s clogged, cuz then you´re just going to get a very dirty floor. If it´s clogged, use a plunger until the water level goes back to normal and you can flush normally.
sounds like the diaphragm in the syphon is broken. need to replace it.

can be replaced with a piece of tough polythene cut to the right shape or with a proper replacement from a plumbers merchant.

how you get the syphon out will depend on what toilet you have. modern ones can be removed just by disconnecting them in the cistern instead of undoing it from under the system which requires draining the cistern.

either way you will need someone with basic diy skills or a plumber to do it.
Sounds like the mechanism inside the cistern has had it. It'll probably only cost you about £60 for a new one. That's what mine cost anyway. In the meantime, get a bucket of water and pour it down the loo from a height and try and push whatever's stuck in there round the bend. It's no fun when your toilets buggered! :)
You calling the toilet a "loo" makes me think you don't have a broken bathroom in America. ?? I'm sure the principles are the same, but do you have a septic tank or do you live in the city? Are there people in your house that may have flushed something large down the toilet (kids just love to see their toys go bye-bye). Just to be sure, I'd google it. I just fixed my own toilet last month; it wasn't difficult. Just make sure you turn off the water source before you try. And if you do end up calling a plumber..well..at least you tried! Good luck!
Soundds like the gasket is gone - you need a new one
If you have little water in the tank then check to make sure that the water inlet pipes havent become clogged with limescale or worse those nasty looblocks that people use.

It could also be that the ballcock is jammed with limescale (the float that goes down and opens the water inlet when empty and then floats up and closes it when full).

You can usually get replacement parts from places such as Wickes and it only requires basic manual dexterity to replace them.

Best bet I find is to get a digital camera and photograph the parts before setting off to help get a perfect match.

Also, dont forget to shut off the water to the loo BEFORE doing any work because once you dismantle you will only have seconds to shut the water off before it is all over the floor.
IF there is little or no water in the toilet tank then the water flow into the tank might be restricted. On the top arm connecting to the ball valve is a small plastic like bag ,remove this and the water may start flowing in normaly
You will need some help, because the cistern will have to be removed if it's close coupled (connected straight to the pan).

You will be able to buy a new syphon from your local DIY store Then it's a straight swap job.

Turn off water first. then you need to empty the cistern.

There is a large plastic nut on the bottom of the cistern which holds the syphon in place.

Keep plenty of towels handy. It can be a bit of a wet job.
tAKE OFF THE the toilet tank lid. From the flush handle it goes to the "flapper valve". That connection(between the handle and the valve is either a chain or a plastic line) This can be adjusted in length.
Sounds like yours is too long - it slipped(so it won't lift the flapper.

Make it shorter..this is experimentation...you want the flapper to open enough to let alot of water thru and yet still fall down when all the water is out(so it closes the hole). You will find the sweet spot. Is a simple fix.
What is wrong is that the diagphram in the siphon of your cistern is knackered. You can buy a new diagphram but the work involved fitting a new one is time consuming . You other option is to have a new siphon fitted.
