Do I really need to use a drip edge on the rake?

Question:I live in the SF Bay Area and am building a shed. The roof is sloped 5 in 12 and will have asphalt shingles with a 1/2" overhang. I have a 1x6 rough sawn rake boards and put 1x2 trim boards at the top of the that board, just under the shingles. I don't want to put an ugly drip edge on it as well. Am I OK with the shingle overhang alone? What's my risk?

Answers:
If you have the 1x2 in place I wouldn't use the drip edge. Caulk, and prime the 1x2 and paint it well. It will be the drip edge. Try not to have any shingle nails going into it, as it may need to be replaced in the future. If the shed stands in a clearing--not a lot of trees and other vegetation--and gets to dry out after a rain it should be fine. As I said, it will be easy to replace if need be.
