I purchased a new natural gas bb qrill to replace an old one.?
Question:The old one used a 3/8" line which doesn't supply enough gas pressure for new model. Unfortunately, gas line is over 30' long and half of it goes under an outside deck. What should I do?
Answers:
Gas code book says 3/8" black iron pipe should supply 40,000 Btu's with .3 inches in water column pressure drop or 52,000 Btu's with .5 inches in water column pressure drop at 30 feet and 3/8" copper line should supply 10,000-15,000 Btu's with those two pressure drops at 30 feet.Since it is a grill the higher pressure drop will be ok.If your grill Btu rating is larger then these ratings then you will need a larger pipe to supply it.3/8" seems a little small to me I think it should have been done with1/2" pipe. You also need to make sure that the line from the meter to the point where the 3/8" pipe comes off is large enough to handle all other appliances it supplies as this will affect the flow at the 3/8" line.If the line was ran before the deck was built it may be harder the replace but either way a new line should be able to be installed. As Frozen has said above I would not turn your regulator up unless the pressure is not set to the proper pressure to begin with and this is something that the gas company should do.The regulator is their property.
Its hard to believe a 3/8" line cant carry the volume of gas needed, have you tried to increase the pressure at the regulator
You wont be able to change the regulator pressure setting since that would effect all you other gas appliances. Check with the local gas company and explain your problem. They should be able to give you a solution. It may be that you require a larger diameter feed line.
