How do I repair a hole in the ceiling?

Question:My partner while in the loft managed to put her foot through ceiling. How do I repair it? Do I need to cut the section square and cut a piece of drywall to the same size? How do I attach it to the remainder of the piece? Really need some help on this.

Answers:
do what you suggested and patch it but just put a larger piece of board ontop of the one that fits in the hole you cut out and glue it there then fill and sand as usual

There are two ways..You can open the hole up more until u find each rafter.Square the hole up and make sure you have a 1/2 inch of rafter exposed on each side so you have a backer to screw the new drywall to.
Or you can simply square the hole up...take a small piece of scrap wood and put it through the hole..lay it flat and get a screw on both sides to suck the wood to the backside of the drywall...no you have the backing to screw to.
I always use mesh tape for holes and repairs. make sure you pull your patch tight so you only have to sand the edges. Surely it will take 2-3 coats of mud. prime the patch with flat paint. then put your finish coat on..good luck.
Hi, they make patches for that kind of thing. The patches are different sized squares of drywall that has a mesh type overlay that extends past the drywall square. That has a very strong adhesive on it. You just peel and stick it on. Than, if you have acoustical ceiling, get some acoustical patch. They make old, and new acoustical . The colors are quite different, you'll probably need the old. You just apply that with a putty knife.Don't smear it on, pat it on. That should do it for you. Bye
Bear gave you all you need to know. I've done this many times (repair, not put a foot through) and either way is effective, as he said, depending on the size of the damaged area, AND if the damage also extends to other areas where the drywall may have popped at the attachment points.

Bear gave you an excellent answer. Your problem is that after you repair the ceiling you will have to repaint the entire ceiling. I have never had luck making a patch completely disappear with out repainting the entire ceiling
Take some concrete and out it there again. The concrete will be stuck there when dried.
that damn bear is right on the money!!!!
patch it
if you dont want it to show, hire a pro, like some of the ones giveng you the good advice. good finish work takes practice.
You should use a patch, but the patch should be slightly larger than the hole. Then you should remove the paper backing and gypsum board middle to fit the size of the hole, while leaving the white paper front to make the best seam. Check out the article below for more information. Good luck.
