Can I open two or three more ducts in basement?
Question:I am remodeling the basement, and I can see the duct pipe was run through the basement ceiling, as far as I can imagine, it should not be too hard to open the duct from the pipe.
Here I have two questions.
1. should I open the ducts (2 or 3) for basement (heating and cooling), what kind of measurement I should consider before I do it, please refer me to URL you think may help me to caculate.
2. is there a good URL which tell DIYer how to open the ducts from the main duct pipe.
Please share me with your experience or give me some suggestions.
Thanks.

You need to consider the affect on the air pressure reduction to the rest of the sytem. If you have a strong blower and vents turned down elsewhere in the house, you may be OK. If you have portions of the house that get insuffucient air, you will make that worse.
I would consider this before figuring out how.
Well, the simple answer is yes...however, you need to be careful of how this will implicate your finances. By doing your basement you will incur more taxes for making the space liveable. This is how it is where I am, and more taxes on that urked me. Therefore if you do some simple 'addons' such as a portable heater or cooling unit...this can avoid the extra taxation...however if this is a non issue...duct work and running new 'zones' can be done. search www.thisoldhouse.com...
Yes.
1: Get the vents that you want.
2: Use them to determine what size openings to cut in the ducting.
3: Cut the openings. ( Drill a 3/8th-ish hole, then use a sheet metal shears ,ie tin-snips, to cut the opening to size)
4: Play it safe. Sheet metal is just another way to say "springy razor blade". Wear gloves and safety glasses.
Have fun, be careful
