Can I use a High Altitude Mobile Home Natural Gas Water Heater in a regular altitude area?
Question:I live in the Detroit Metro area and I don't believe that it would be considered a high altitude area.
Answers:
High altitude rating on appliances is determined by gas/oxygen ratio required toburn properly the factory settings on the mixture regulator can be adjusted by a qualified service technician and the gas supply orfice may have to be changed to asmaller diameter this can all be accomplished but the cost of the service call may be more than just getting a appliance sold for your local area
Yes, but how high altitude is the heater rated.
You still may have to derate the orifice.
We are at 3650 elevation and water heaters rated at 7000 and above work just fine here. The State, Reliance and Sears rated at 7000 and above do great here.
You can take the serial and model number and call the manufacturer to find out how high the heater is rated, but it should do okay.
A qualified eye can see the burner flame and tell if it'll work for you.
I am qualified to derate and it's an easy job.
But you'll need to get the gas company, or a licensed gasfitter to do it.
Most plumbers are also licensed for natural gas.
Shouldn't be more than a regular service call to derate your heater.
