I want to have a Whole House Fan installed in my home and need to know which one to get (and pros/cons)?
Question:I was wondering which whole house fan to get. The house is 1 story and approximately 2000 Sq. ft. It has 4 bedroom and I think there is around 4 ft of attic height.

Here are some things to look at
High dollar version (quiet, self insulating)

This is a very cool system $500 and up
Multiple Fans
This is a small fan for a single room-the idea is to put one in several rooms. @$400 each

Good ole noisy fan
You can find these at your local big box store they may be available in both direct and belt drive. (you want direct) These are great for sleeping if you like white noise, not so great if your trying to watch TV. $150ish

Air-to-air heat exchanger
Another alternative would be to use an air-to-air heat exchanger. This uses your HVAC system to bring in fresh air, you can use it year-round to improve your indoor air quality. Probably about a $1000ish installed.

Know the square footage of your house to size the unit. Make sure you open enough windows. Negative pressure can cause gas appliances to back-draft.
In some areas the electric company will give you a rebate for installing a whole house fan. (especially CA)
GL
,we had one installed in the attic, we would open the attic door partially, & turn the fan on, the windows would be open, all the cool air would come in through the windows, worked alot better at night, but if you have metal screens dont use when its raining or damp out, will rust the screens, over all we liked it.
you local home center is the best place to start you can get 2 kinds a fan blade or a squrell cage that will blow ideals out of your head ether way i would have the motor a 240 volt it will run cheeper than a 120 volt motor and you can install a wall timmer just below the fan
I think you may need a 36" belt-driven fan. I installed a 30" fan for my 1600 sq ft house and it seems to be just OK. Make sure to check summer rebates offered by your local utility company. I bought my fan 2 years ago from Lowe's for $160 and get a rebate of $150 from SoCal Edison. Good luck.
just go to lowes and tell then the square footage of your home and they will point you in to right size fan, your attic has to have the right type of ventilation before they will work properly
I personally dont have one or no much about it but a good friend of mine does and its kinda cool makes the air in her home alot nicer to deal with and I would imagine its alot cheaper then central air... i remember that whenever she closed her window the pressure created would force her bedroom door to slam shut because the unit was that powerfull... the only really big issue is that the intake vent used to get hella dirty from the outside air coming in... thoe they sell this air filters you can put in your windows to filter the air as it comes in which might cut back on that too... I say go for it its very green compared to AC
