Lining up colours and how to connect them?

Question:Having just moved house I am now about to start putting up the lights we brought with us; but the house wiring follows the old colour scheme.

The light socket has green, red and black wires, while my light has green, blue and brown wires. Obvious the greens are the earth but how do the other wires match.

Plus, bearing in mind that this ISN'T a standard ceiling rose, what is the safest (and securest) way to connect the wires from the light socket to the wires of the light fitting.

Incidentally, I didn't take the lights down at our previous house so I didn't get the chance to see how wires matched or were connected.

Answers:
The wiring colours changed recently to simplify things for those who know what they're doing anyway, which doesn't help your good self who's a little unsure!

To put it simply though, the old system was as follows:

Red = Live
Black = Neutral
Bare copper (with green and yellow sleeve when installed)
= Earth

The new system is as follows:

Brown = Live
Blue = Neutral
Bare copper (with green and yellow sleeve when installed)
= Earth

This is the same as a 3 pin plug as now the wiring in the sockets and lighting will be the same as the plugs that go into them. It will however take while for you to see the new coloured wiring in older houses as the wiring is gradually replaced.

The website by the other posters are very useful for the wiring diagrams.

red=live
black=return/neutral

red to brown, black to blue. A standard cable block should do the trick.

BTW. Red black and green are standard for household wiring circuits whereas brown, blue and yellow/green stripe are used in electrical devices. This differentiates cables capable of carrying higher or lower loads of current.
the red and brown are the same
the black and blue are the same, just think about the saying , being black and blue, if u think its too complicated ask an eletrician as i dont think you'd like a shock or doing it ar+e ways
Have a look at the diagrams below, they show different ways of connecting up your light in the ceiling.

Remember, we changed from red & black to brown & blue. Earth remained green/yellow.
