Is there a preferred way to repair Low Voltage landscape wire?
Question:How would you repair a nick in the wire caused by a poorly placed fixture. And how about extending a line? I cut some 12 gauge wire a little too short and would like to add 15 feet back on. Somehow, burying wirenuts doesn't seem to cut it.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
Answers:
To repair the nick (assuming only one strand is bared) tape up using insulating tape half lapped (start at an angle, and each wrap around covers half the previous one). Make sure there are no gaps for moisture to get through. Cover the whole repair with silicone sealer, amd allow to dry, for a really watertight repair.
To add extra wire, ideally solder the joints, then insulate each side, then half lap tape the whole join, then cover in silicone. If you can't solder the joins, then at the very least twist the wires together as tightly as you can (about half inch of bare wire on each side) , then fold each twisted section back so it lies flat, insulate, etc.
Thet sell water tight wire nuts at your local electrical outlet and major home improvment stores, with low voltage it is different than say 120 volt
Underground splice kit.
