I just bought an air compressor and would like to buy a spray gun to use with paint, stains, and finishes?

If you are going to be doing "fine" finishes, look at HVLP sprayguns. Don't go cheap as that is what you will get. As far as general purpose guns, I like DeVilbiss and Binks.
On job sites I personally like the "airless" meaning no little can attached to a trigger/sprayer handle. For one thing it allows that I can stick the siphon into any substance I wish to spray, and be as far away from the source as my hoses will allow, sometimes 100 ft. and only have the "gun" to worry about.
Obviously that may not be an issue if you only need a quart at a time for small, easy to finish, close work.
In this case, it seems as though you'll be using this tool multiple times on various projects. I'd go for the best. Cutting corners with assumed value is often disappointing. That said however, this question will garner personal opinions, as well as valid answers. We all have different ideas as to choice.
Nozzles, are the essence of the tool, as well as the PSI produced by whatever compressor you have, and the recommended application processes with various substances to be sprayed. The hardware of the gun itself should be substantial, easy to clean after the fact, have the ability to be dismantled and reassembled like a Firearm, and withstand whatever you put it through, at least for any life its waranteed for. It should also be one that is readily serviceable in replacing worn parts, or be one that at least offers replacement parts without having to go to China.
