mark out area, remove sod and dig down at least 6 in. tamp soil , add crushed stone , tamp again. form with 2x4's . brace them all the way around with stakes. every 6 ft or so. pour concrete and finish...i would get it all ready and hire a finisher if it has any size to it...

paving like asphalt, or paving stones?
If you're taking about a concrete patio, remove the sod from the area you want to build on, grade the soil to level and use the high side of some 2x4s to box the area in. Make a 1-inch trench to set them in to save money on the concrete, but leave enough room around the outside to take them off once you're finished. Nail them together, too. Otherwise the weight of the concrete will push them apart. Tamper the ground out so that the soil is compacted to the point where you don't leave footprints when walking across. Depending on the size of the patio, you may want to lay out a grid of rebar for strength - it's up to you but I would definitely spend the time and money to keep the pation from craking later on. Then spread gravel over the area about an inch and a half to two inches thick and fill it with concrete. Level off the top and fire up the barbeque.
