How do I fix a wooden floorboard?
Question:I am just about to pull up a carpet in a room and have notticed a hole in the floorboard. The hole is about 1-2 inches wide and 5 inches long.
How do I go about replacing and fixing this?
Answers:
If the floor with the hole is the sub floor (ie ply-wood), you should cut out a piece of the sub floor wide enough to expose two of the joists (support beams) under the floor. Then you can cut a new piece of ply-wood (same thickness as what is there...could be 1/2" or 3/4") to fit in the hole. Secure the new piece to the two joists with screws and you are all set.
If the floor is hardwood or and old wide pine floor, you will need to find something to match what is there. Either way, follow the same principal of exposing two joists so you will be able to properly secure the new piece of flooring. Typically joists are 12" to 16" apart (center to center), depending on where your house is and how old it is.
you need to replace that piece, which may be difficult. And it is just to long to type out the rest of the info.
if the sub floor is wood that is exposed find where your floor joist are and cut out area big enough to fit the joist and only cut length ways to expose about the same area. cut pieces of wood to fit the other two ends between the joist and use screws to hold underneath. then cut out piece of replacement to fit. if its flooring. you needt to get a really sharp half inch wide wood chiesel and cut each end of flooring that is rotted where the wood has good structure. it'll be hard to find a matching color piece... so good luck
