Any advice on varnishing a new bannister?
Question:got to do one 2mrw..
someone said to me that the best way to do it is go round the spindles rather than up and down??
also do you HAVE to dilute the vanish first?
Answers:
Do not dilute the varnish.
go around but be sure to get good coverage and lay it off with a semi dry brush to prevent drips.
Laying it off is just going back over it without dipping your brush in the varnish.
You will get the hang of it and be done in no time...
Put your hand into a rubber glove (to protect your skin) then a sock (heavy wool is best) over the glove. Dip that hand in the varnish (just enough to cover your fingers) & rub your hand around the spindles (kind of like a loose grabbing grip or motorcycle throttle). Careful of drips.
Should be no need to dilute.

they do make a wool glove to apply varnish with. you do not need to thin varnish
