How do I make the house cooler?
Question:I have no A/C, no curtains, and opening windows doesn't help.
How can I make the burning go away?
Answers:
If you can't afford curtains, make your own. Pick up some fairly thick sheets on clearance or at yard sales and some lining. If you don't sew, use hem tape to attach the edges. If you own your home and don't have curtain rods, you can use velcro strips that attach to the wall to hang them. Once the curtains are up, keep them closed when the sun is streaming through. For light you can open the ones where the sun isn't hitting the window directly. Opening the windows will only help when there is a breeze blowing through your window. Creating a cross-breeze by opening a window on opposite sides of the room will draw the air in and create movement which helps cool. If you can afford it, invest in a small window air conditioner. Wal-Mart usually puts one on sale this time of year for under $100. You can also check yard sales for used ones. If you have a 2 story house, installing one small one downstairs and one upstairs, running on low even in hot weather, will keep the house at least comfortable.
fans are pretty cheap but youll have a higher electric bill itll be worth it though
I would buy some fans and at night you put them in the windows. Keep most of your windows open at night if that's possible and shut all the windows when you get up in the morning. That's what I do and I learned it from my mom. This really works!
Move some furniture around in the house and throw out the things you dont need. Keep your house clean, less clutter sometimes helps with the breeze in your home. I'm not saying your house is cluttered. It's just a thought.
Go get a couple of good fans to move the air, and they will help in cooling the house a little. I have ceiling fans in my livingroom, bathroom and bedroom, and they make the rooms very comfortable. You should think about installing a good AC, if you get that hot. Also, plant some shade trees were the sun is hitting the house, and also, some tall growing plants, in the area of the house that gets all day sun..
for a small fee you can have roof vents put in to let the HOT air out of the attic...when the heat gets overwhelming up there it radiates down.also running ceiling fans pulls the hot air from the attic down, so avoid that. window fans are about you only quick alternitive. plant a tree that in a few years will keep the house shaded.
replace windows, insulate more...those get expensive.
good luck
Place a fan in the open windows at one end of the house facing outword (air blowing out). This will create a pull from other windows in the house and create a breeze..
Do you have an attic vent or window, try opening this, all the hot air will be sucked out Try hanging blankets over the windows to block the sun
Place a fan in a window that is on the south side of your home and a second fan in a north side window but place it to blow out the window this will allow cool fresh air to blow thru the house and pulls the hot air out.
You may want to consider a whole house fan. Place it in a hole in the ceiling on the top floor of the dwelling. Then you just barely crack lower windows. This will cause a very cool strong breeze through the whole dwelling. Open windows at night, but keep them closed in the heat of the day. You can also try puttng a reflecting material on drapes and keeping them closed during the day.
Whatever it takes, you need to get an air conditioner. There is no way to cool off hot air by moving it around. It will still be hot air. You can shop around and find a used a/c for $200 or even less.
Sensing that you have limited resources to do this with, i would (a) tape aluminum foil (shiny side out) to the east west and southern windows. (b) open the basement windows, basement door and all the windows or vents in the highest room in the house (preferably the attic). Leave all the rest of the windows closed. This will let the hot air rise out of the attic (or highest room) and draw the much cooler basement air up through the rest of the house. Keep a fan blowing on you at night. Drink lots of water. And, if you feel like this is impacting your health call your health department. They frequently have fans to give away and cooling centers that you can go to. I hope this helps.
