How do I make a baby blanket like this....?

Question:I bought my daughter a blanket that is a piece of cotton and a piece of flannel sewed together with ric-rac in the middle. How would I go about making a blanket like this? Oh and any suggestions of something similiar for a boy, but more masculine than ric-rac? Help. I really want to learn to sew these.

Answers:
y not use the fleece material w/ no sew. U cut strips around the edges.. 3-4" & tie them together.

When you say rick rack in the middle, do you mean on the surface of the blanket or as an edging?

My Mom and I make baby blankets all the time and the easiest one to make very simple. Take two 1 1/2 yard lengths of fabric (45 inches wide) and place them wrong side together. Stitch a 1/2 inch seam a all around, leaving a 6 inch opening to turn. Trim corners and turn right side out. Press to smooth and hand stitch opening closed. Top stitch around the edge. (1/4 to 1 inch deep, by preference). You could then stitch down trims and or ribbons on the surface as desired. You could add batting to the blanket before you turn it, just trim to fit the whole size and whip stitch batting along seam edges. You can still top stitch edges, if desired. Tie through all thickness with coordination color of embroidery floss at regular intervals to hold batting in place.

I hope this help you some.
THink about it spatially.

Put the right sides of the fabric together with the ric rac stuck inbetween and pin it right against the edges. You will need to find a seam allowance that will allow the ric-rac to stick out however much you want. So if the ric-rac is 1/2 inch wide you may want a seam allowance that is 1/4 inch.

Anyway sew the pieces together all the way around, just leaving enough room to turn the blanket right side out. Hand sew the hole closed.

good luck. Ric rac can be masculine if it is in the right color and paired with the fabrics well. How about a blue and red plaid with a navy ric-rac border.
Start by sewing the rick rack to the right side of one piece of fabric.
Then pin your two pieces together with right sides facing each other. Sew along stitch line where you sewed on rick rack. Be sure to leave yourself room to turn it right side out. There is rick rack that is a denim color that would be suitable for a boy. Good luck!
I put together a "blankie" similar to the ever popular rag quilts for my day care provider. I took 2 sections of flannel (whatever size you prefer), colors are unlimited, put a piece of cotton batting (low loft) between - keeping batting about 1 1/2" from edge of flannel. Sew around all 4 sides about 1" from each edge. Using scissors or snips, clip into both pieces of flannel every 1/2 to 1" around blanket. When laundered this will fray or fuzz up. You may wish to do some simple quilting through the middle of the blanket to keep batting from sliding. One option is to sew from corner to corner diagonally (big X) to keep it from moving.

Good luck.
well there are books for sewing and its easyy if you go to walmart and find the sew patterns and sew onong the pattern you can learn I learned that way.
