Hand made windmill?
Question:my dad would like to build a windmill to power his house.know any web sites that will give instructions on how to do it?thanx.
Answers:
Yes, he can build on even on his own .
Power his house? I doubt it . You would need a fairly large prop to do somethign like that and be in a "wind field" area to be effective.
But an ordinary windmill, that is quite easly done with a gear box, reducing the prop RPM to something practical like 100 to one ratio.
You can buy a light duty gear box at Graingers for about $50 and add a prop and tail to it and balance it on a pivot to start and generate about 300 Watts of power with a generator also bought at Graingers.
i would love to do the same but i dont believe that it is a practical application as the wind doesnt always blow. therefore you need to store power in batteries and now you are no longer saving money. you will have to spend more than it is worth just for battery upkeep.
A windmill big enough to power up an entire house would have to be, like, a hundred feet tall, cost a hundred thousand dollars and take a submarines battery bank to keep the power on all the time. Oh yeah, his house will have to be where there's a constant wind too. Ask dad if he would maybe want to consider solar panels. :)
