Woodwork (round doorway)?

Question:I want to build a "keyhole doorway", which is basically square at the bottom, and widens in to a round shape from middle to top. This wood mean bending wood into a round form. Is bending plywood the only way? Or is there something else I havent thought of? Keep in mind it would have to be atleast 5" deep

Answers:
you can plane the wood but I would use luan plywood if i was you. It has a smooth surface and can be easily painted and will look great

Not sure what you mean? Is this the jamb or the casing your talking about and will it have a certain profile? Maybe if I knew more I could help you.
You can plane wood to a thickness of 1/8" or less. Thin enough so you can bend it around the radius you require. Use the type of wood you are using for the rest of your trim for the inside ply.You will need about six layers or enough so the total thickness is about 3/4". The layers while bent to the shape of the arch must be glued with wood glue and clamped and allowed to completely dry before removing the clamps. You will have to build a form and clamping system to match your arch. Clamping about every 3" is required for good results. Long drywall screws (3'' to 4") and wood cleats make good clamps.
You can build it with solid wood. However with this material you will need to joint several part to 1. In the round part of the jamb, divide it into 4 or more parts and make a round shape that you want and joint it. After that you can make whatever profile you wish to. Bear in mind that with this material, you will use a lot more, and if cost is the matter here, plywood is the best solution.
there is this iron on wood venner i made my door jambs with oak veneer. home depot should have it.
The real way to do it, would be to bend lengths of solid wood to your shape. The wood should be steamed and bent green, and allowed to cure in the bending jig. This takes over a year, unless you have a kiln. Some woods bend better that others, so you have to choose your species carefully.
The above answers give you several good options that offer more immediate results.
