Removing old fan switch from wall...?

Question:I just replaced my old ceiling fan / lighting fixture with a new chandelier. The old fixture had two knobs on the wall – one for the light and one for the fan. I only need the one knob now. How do I remove the knob I don’t need anymore from the wall? Can I plaster over it?

Answers:
Disconnect the old switch and replace it with a new single switch for the new light. You can buy a two gang switch cover with a blank on one side to cover the missing switch.

The two switches probably have the same power wire to both. Possibly a jumper wire in place. You need to disconnect the power wire from the power supply. It is unsafe and illegal to leave live wires in an enclosed wall. If you want to just cap the wires, you need to remove the switch and place a blank wall plate over the opening.
