My attic fan sounds like the belt islipping. Who would I call to fix that, or buy the belt myself ?

Question:

on some of these the weight of the motor keeps the belt tight and on some of these the motor bolts solid to the frame ...once you determine how the motor is mounted to the fan housing you will be able to figure out how to get the belt off .any auto parts store that sells belts can supply you with a new belt.check to make sure fan bearings are good and dont have any side to side movement...also check to see if you can oil the motor or grease it ...if it is oilable there will be a tiny hole on each end directly over the shaft ...if it is greasable it will have grease fittings on it...this is a very easy job and you should have no problems replacing the belt...be sure and turn power off before attempting any repairs...

You would call the A/C service.
I would really douwt that there is a belt on that unit. Most attic fans have a electric motor with a shaft that spins the blade. If you are not sure, I would still call a AC man or local handy man.
pretty easy fix, the motor is mounted with a tension spring to keep the belt tight as it streghes with age. push against the motor just enough to remove the belt. get a new belt at the auto parts store, or similar and re-install the belt. this is assuming you can get to it from above, if not you will have to remove the louvers and get to it from the bottom, again real easy, usually 6 or so screws. it,s made of aluminum, so it's relatively light and easy to handle. just two pulleys to go around, one on the motor, one on the fan. don't know how old your fan is but i think you should also check, after you take the belt off, to see if maybe the bearings in the motor or the fan could be bad. remove the belt, spin the fan by hand and see if it's still making your noise, if not turn on the motor and see if it makes a noise, AGAIN, BELT OFF!. an older motor might still have a place on each end of it to put a few drops of oil in. slap this big baby back together, sit dow and get your chin in the wind, your knees in the breeze, and enjoy a shot of good whiskey without all the skreaking noise.
That would be an e z fix. Tighten the belt by moving the motor further from the fan and then add a little belt dressing. That will solve your problem and it is cheap.
wwwstat has the right idea. A quick fix would be to go to your local auto parts store and get a can of "Belt Dressing".
