How much to cut a 3' by 3' hole & fit a window?
Question:It's a 9" solid wall at 1st floor level. It is a supporting wall, but there is only a gable above, so it doesn't really take much weight. I'm trying to get quotes, but just want to know what's reasonable?
Answers:
materials:
Window: £75
lintel:£20
general stuff: £15
labour: 2 days max, or just 1 day or you find a decent builder or prepared to make good any plaster. Typical UK builders labour is £120 per day, dearer down south and in large cities.
So, i'd say the job was between £200-£300 including window
Go for a "one man band" builder based on reputation. you will struggle to get a "firm" to do work of that size.
based on my expereince of doing up about 3 houses per year, so thats about 50 windows.
You'd need to do this under building regs so that would add about £105 when you submit building notice to the council ( no need for outline permission assuming you down overlook anyone ). If you do it under regs notice then the council will sign it off and the window fitter need not be a FENSA registered person...much cheaper as costed above.
Get three estimates and take the best one.

you will need two lintels not one, and if the opening is on the first floor or above then you will need scaffolding (health and safety).
builders will work for £120.00 per day for a decent size job but for a one day for two men job like this they (i) would expect at least £200.00 per day each. i would charge you £700.00 for the job. hole in wall, window supplied and fitted new window board and brickwork and plasterwork made good.
if you are in west Yorkshire and the price looks good give me a call 07738378668
