Can you put the silver back in a gazing ball?
Question:My gazing ball has lost it's color and now is a clear glass ball. I want to know if I can make it mirror like again.
Answers:
Actually, the ones at Wal-Mart are glass. I've broken a few. If it's a heirloom, antique blown-glass ball that your great-great-grandfather brought over from Germany when he emigrated to the U.S., then by all means, pay to have it re-silvered. Otherwise, go back to Wal- Mart (or Big Lots. That's where I buy mine.)
I would not waste the $ on fixing it. They only cost about $12 at Walmart. A neat idea from Florida-they use old speckled bowling balls on a pedestal. You can't see your reflection but they're pretty.
...and now to actually answer your question..
Yes.
Although, it would probably be a whole lot easier and cheaper to get someone that restores/re-silvers old mirrors to do this work as they will already have everything needed to do it.
That said, again yes, you can do this. Try google'ing "mirror re-silvering" and such things.SOMETHING will turn up..and I've seen mirrors being re-silvered...it's not a big huge deal.
PS, I love that "go to wal-mart" thing...it seems like that's THE answer to some people.(so much for anything precious or cherished...when there's always a cheap, mass produced plastic "replica" at wal-mart).
