What is the best brand of wood chopping axe?
Question:
Answers:
I'm not familiar with many name brands, however we chop/cut wood alot. My husband favors a "splitting axe" rather than a traditional axe. It has wedges that wing out from the main blade. Depending on the age and type of wood you're splitting, this does wonders and cuts time and number of swings in half. Plus, it also makes excellent splittings for kindling. Hope this helped.
(We bought ours at Wal-Mart...and a fiberglass handle absorbs more shock than a wooden handle, and usually weathers moisture better.)
I'm not sure that you will have that many brand choices for axes at retail. You will hopefully have choices for types of axes.
Regardless of the brand you end up buying, the best thing you can do is spend time sharpening it before you use it. A metal file should get you a good edge, but you can use a stone if you want even sharper.
Here's a link that explains both some of the differences in axe types and sharpening methods.
Good luck-
