Any advice on building my own wooden hammock stand?
Question:I don't want to shell out $100 for the DIY steel brackets. I intend to use the basic \__/ shaped design made with 4x4's, but want to make sure the joints are strong enough. Any advice? (preferably advice from woodworkers or people who have done this before)

I'd suggest using 6"x6" posts rather than 4"x4" and they should be 10' or longer, Post-Hole Dig aprox. 4' deep and set them in concrete completely to ground surface. (aprox. #4 - 60lb. bags) Tip: When digging a post hole= Tighter the Hole, Stronger the Pole, so keep the same dia. all the way down if possible. Allow the crete to cure at least 24 hrs.And good luck
One way is to glue and nail 3/4" exterior plywood on either side of the joint (should extend at least 8" beyond joint). Make sure your "feet" extend out at least 12" to 18" beyond centerline so the hammock won't tip over. A very beautiful stand is made by laminating bent 1/2" boards into a graceful arch but you need to know about steaming wood and use a very good exterior glue with lots of clamps.
