Can I sand anything off the top of a hard-wood floor, including glue and some rubber-like black substance?
Question:The glue was used to hold tiles down and the black rubber-like substance can be scraped off with just my fingernail but it's all over the floor. Will these gum up the sandpaper?
Answers:
If you are thinking you are going to sand that floor yourself with good results , Think again, I know that is not what you want to hear but if you are serious call several wood flooring refinishers and get some bids ask them how they are going to get it done and you can try to replicate the process . They use what is called a drum sander which can be rented at your local rental store, but do your research I have seen amateurs use them with disastrous results gouging of the wood etc. If this glue and tile backing residue is not that thick or bad you can try it your self with a belt sander going with the grain Good Luck from Texas And if you decide to hire the contractor you don't have take the highest bid but NEVER take the lowest One more thing my local library had a book on refinishing floors that came with a video
First off, if the glue is black and held tiles down, I would want to check it for asbestos!!
If its "clean" for asbestos, then get a scraper, thats the easy way to get the stuff up. Sandpaper will "blind", or fill up the pores and clog real quick. If you can scrape it up with a finger nail, use the wide 4 inch scraper instead.
I wish you well...

you need to get a drum sander and use 16 grit sand paper and still it will take a few pieces but its a lot easier than anything i know. but it does mean completely refininshing the floors.
Try what the guys above said, and I would also recommend getting some Goo-Gone. It helps get stuff like that off your floor and makes it easier.
There is a solution that you can buy for that specific problem. Any glue like tape glue, wax dirt, will be easily removed if you put this solution. I think you can call it "glue-gone". yes that's the advertisement they have on the label, but not the name of the product. I got mine at home dep.t. It's in a form of spray, colorless and odorless.hope this help.
Try putting tequila on it
