Can I tile over an exposed aggregate rock pool deck?
Question:I have exposed aggregate rock around my pool. I would like to just tile over the rock. Is there any reason why this would not work?
Answers:
It really depends on a couple of things.
First. the exposed rock is it in good shape? not breaking up cracks, divots, loose rock in the cement?
Second. the type of tile you choose. get Porcelain with an impervious water rating. Not a Ceramic tile.
If the base is good then yes you can tile over it.
But another option is this.. put down a sand base over the aggregate lay any combination of paver stone they have out there then mortar the joints. I just did this for a homeowner and she loved it. Even a non-skid tile can get slippery and most of the higher end tile (porcelain) will cost more than most high end pavers. And done in many patterns the pavers look outstanding.
none that i can think of. first off clean the area with a solution of water and muriatic acid, following the directions on the acid jug. you can purchase it at a hardware store or walmart. be careful!
i believe you'll be able to lay the thinset mortar right over the exposed aggregate and set the tiles.
I agree with acid washing the area first. When acid washing, hand scrub the area while the acid sits on the rocks. Then wipe the area clean with fresh water. Let sit for a few hours and then lay your tile of choice. There are many tiles to choose from, whatever you use, make sure it has some rough texture to it. Otherwise it will be very slippery when wet. You may want to look into some of the natural stones. Not only are they beautiful but, they have great texture as well. Before I forget, use a latex fortified thinset. Good luck.
