Calculating square feet needed fo flooring?
Question:Calculating square feet needed fo flooring - if I have an area that is 15' x 20' and the tile is 12" x 12" how do I do the calculation?
Answers:
15feet X 20feet = 300square feet total...depending on the complexity of the cuts (tiles that have to be cut to fit odd shaped places)... you should add 10% to 15% extra for breakage, bad cuts etc...I would purchase about 20 to 30 extra tiles ( because you are in-experienced and may make any number of misstakes in cutting and laying the tile out) for a final total of 320 to 330--12X12 tiles....
Well, that's easy. 15' x 20' = a square footage of 300'. Each tile is 1 foot square. So, you need 300 tiles.
First make sure that you've rounded up in your measurements. That is, when you say 15 by 20, the room should be 14 something by 19 something.
Multiply the two numbers. 15 times 20 is 300. Since your floor tile is exactly 1 square foot, you would need at minimum 300 tiles.
A good rule of thumb is to buy 10% more than you need to take into account any losses or mistakes in cutting or trimming.
Width x length you get square ft.
15 x 30 = 300, your tile is 1 square foot.you need 300 tiles
15 feet by 20 feet equals 300 square feet..
Actually, the tile should be slightly smaller than 12 inch square to allow for a 1/4 inch grout line..but essentially one square 12 inch tile is one square foot...
Manufacturers say you need at least 10% extra for waste.. I usually find 5% is acceptable if you are careful and plan it out right.. However, if it is special order (or extremely cheap like a closeout) get the 10% extra because it may be hard to match in the future.. and you may wind up with a partially finished floor if you run out.
Sounds like you need 300 tiles at least.
Buy more though for miscuts and mistakes, scrap, etc.
We threw no cut tiles away until the job was done. If the scrap or miscut piece could be used someplace else, we did it.
We had very little to throw away by doing that.
We laid about 1200 square feet and only bought one box extra, and it was enough
Multiply 15 X 20 = your total sq. feet.
Multiply 12 X 12 = your total sq. feet.
330 tiles wold be the correct answer always add 10% to the number 15 x 20 = 300 + 10% = 30 = 330 If you are setting tiles on point (on a diagonal) add another 5% It's always best to have extra because batches can have subtle differences in shades.
As everyone said, use the formula of length times width. Therefore plug your number into this formula, 15 X 20 = 300. There you go, you need 300 square feet of tile. If your going to lay your tile on a straight lay or broken joint, you will be safe with 300 sq. ft., that's saying you measured up to the nearest foot and NOT down. Otherwise re-measure. If your going to lay the tile on a diagonal pattern, you'll need to add 10 percent to the number of square feet. In this case it will be 30 more square feet. Good luck.
You have a 300 square foot area, consider the shape of the area and how many cut you are going to make. Get 10% or 15 % more than you need. 330 or more, the extra you might return to the dealer, check before you buy.
When you buy the tile, make sure it is the same log or batch, the color may have a little different from batch to batch.
you have 300 sq ft. hence you need 300 tile.
