Should I build a deck myself or have someone build it for me?
Question:I've never built one before, but I'm fairly handy. I can't decide if it's worth paying the extra money or not to have one built. And, any idea what it would cost to build a 20x12 myself vs. someone else building it? Any other suggestions or recommendations would also be appreciated.

Only you can decide that question. But here are some things to think about.
Do you already own all the tools you will need? Some carpentry tools (sliding miter saw, air/power nailer, cordless drill/driver) are expensive in themselves.
Do you understand the process? Decks in different areas are subject to different building codes and bylaws. I know it sounds insane but believe it or not an inspector may walk by and order you to tear apart that nice cedar deck because the footings are an inch too small or spaced a foot too far apart.
Do you know exactly what you want? Decks come in a variety of designs and styles. Do you know what style you would like to build?
Do you have the time? A deck seems simple, but it is actually a lengthly process to construct one properly that will last. If you have lots of other commitments already it may be a lot more time efficient to call in the pros.
Just some stuff to think about.
do you have any friends who can help you so you don't have to hire someone?
The best thing to do is go to Home Depot, Lowe's and buy a DIY book on decks, then do a lay out what you want, do a break down of materials and price it out, then call for some free estimates and compare. You can always invite your friends to a deck party with all the trimmings and tell them you need the deck built first and ask for volunteers :)
Do it yourself, it is not difficult and if you DIY it will be cheaper and often better than if a pro does it-
This is a good guide-
