First determine if the lights are controlled by only one switch or two or more. If it's one light switch, its pretty easy and instructions are included with the dimmer.
If the lights are controlled by two or more its called a three way wired circuit and your lights wiring includes a extra wire to complete the loop and may not have enough room in the switch electrical box to install the fat dimmer switch in the box with all the extra wires in there.
Also, make sure you get the right dimmer. It should be a single pole incandescent lights dimmer for a single switch or three way dimmer for three way(multi switches). One last thing, dimmers should not be installed to control florescent lights and always flip the breaker off when working on electrics

Don't re-wire anything in the box. Just take the wires off the existing switch, one at a time, and install it on the dimmer.
