Best way to melt brass down into zinc and copper without burning off zinc.?
Question:I need to know the best procedures for melting brass down into copper and zinc without the zinc being lost due to the higher temp needed to melt the copper. Also if the copper and zinc are fully seperated and then cooled into bars would this make each metal 99.99% pure since this brass contains no other known impurties. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide.
Answers:
this is extremely dangerous. special precautions need to be taken so that you don't get zinc poisoning and die. zinc poisoning is also called metal fume fever and it is a common hazard in metal forging. I doubt if you could maintain the purity level without very high quality facilities. you would need a smelter capable of the temperatures needed to melt the brass without any other impurities being inadvertently added to the mix.
