Building a deck over an egress window...?

Question:We are looking to build a deck over the basement egress window. The inspector told us that we have to install a grate in the deck (as opposed to cutting and hinging a "trap" door in the decking material).
Has anyone done this? and any tips on doing so?

Answers:
Nine chances out of ten the Inspector telling you to do this could just as well gone back to his vehicle and printed off a diagram explaining it.

Most inspectors in Minnesota have that capability.

I'd contact your City and ask them what code they're using and have them define it for you since every area does have specific codes to follow.

They want a grate so that it can be lifted out without any restrictions, as hinges could rust or jam. They want to make sure that you can use that as an escape route in the event of a fire or other serious emergency. It can be made from the same material as the deck so that it blends in, you just have to make sure that it meets the code for strength, so no one would fall through and injure themselves. you just build out the edges so that the grate can lay in the opening and be flush with the rest of the deck. When someone needs to come up through it, all they will have to do is push it up and to the side. You could make it with metal but that may not look as good. It is up to you.
