Polishing tiles?

Question:I have just had my bathroom tiled, and am in the process of grouting it. Obviously it need sealing, but my bf said something about polishing the tiles? Help anyone?

Answers:
As a proffesional tile installer I have never had to polish tiles unless polishing granite edges. If you are using sanded grout mix grout firm but not to thick allow to sit ten minutes then remix adding a little water if needed to loosen it up again.Apply grout with grout float in a diagonal angle to avoid pulling grout from the joint work at a brisk pace.As soon as you have finished applying grout bring in a bucket of fresh water a sponge and a margin trowel.Using the trowel clean excess grout away from tubs, showers and cabinet base. Then wet your grout sponge and start removing grout from the tile again at a diagonal direction to avoid pulling grout from the joint.I find it easier to wash a few tiles with the sponge wring it out then make one pass per clean side across the tiles you wiped allready.Work your way out of the room this way.Allow the room to dry for about 1/2 hour then using a fresh bucket of water and a clean sponge rinse the floor all the grout residue should be removed from the tile on this pass if not rewash again.Wait three days before washing again then use a vinegar and water wash the first time wetting the floor thoroughly as water helps grout harden. If you want to seal the grout joints at this time.Hope this helps

i dont think you need to polish tiles or seal grout, thats what grout is for, or do you mean the seal round the bath? i can recommend cillit bang, lime and grime cleaner, i thought my bathroom had, had it but i used this and it really works, its why barry scott shouts so loud on the telly
Grouting And Sealing

It is essential to use waterproof grout for any bath or shower surrounds. Grout comes in a pre-mixed paste grey, white or brown paste, although it is also possible these days to source coloured grouts that will blend in with your choice of tiles. Allow the tile adhesive to harden for 24 hours before applying the grout using a rubber-bladed spreader, ensuring that are the joints are filled. Using a sponge, wipe the grout from the surface of the tiles before it sets and smooth the joints with a blunt-ended stick. When it has dried, use a dry cloth to polish the face of the tiles and leave for about a week before using.

Sealing Bathroom Fittings

You should not use grout to seal the gap between the shower tray or bathtub and the wall, since it can crack and lose its waterproof seal. It's best to use a silicon sealant compound, which you can buy in cartridges. The sealants are again available in a choice of colours to match your choice of tile. Trim the end off the nozzle and press the tip into the joint at an angle of 45 degrees. When applying the sealant to bathtubs, it's best to stand in the bath* since the join will accommodate your body weight. When you have finished, smooth over any ripples with a wetted teaspoon handle.
First of all your tile DOES need to be sealed, I always applied 2 coats, it prevents moisture etc seaping in and possibly "popping the grout". As for polishing, I only polished wall tiles...you use a car paste wax such as Turtle wax, apply it the same as you would on a car. This prevents dirt, moisture etc collecting on the tile, and also makes for easy clean ups with just a damp cloth. DO NOT apply polish to the floor tiles, it is a safety hazard!
yes, after grouting, you need to polish the excess grout off of the tiles. As you grout, try to wipe up as much of the excess as possible, that will make the polishing that much easier. After the grout is set, polish the tiles until they shine. Then do your sealing.

Good luck.
If you are using a powdered grout it is portland cement and needs to be sealed. If you using grout that is premixed it is probably latex and doesn't need sealing. Paper towels are great for polishing tiles. Use dry. It is just abrasive enough to polish without scratching.
