Cheap way to restore an old dresser?

Question:i have a really cool old dresser, but two of the bottom drawers are kind of slip-slidy, it needs all new knobs (i think 14 total?), and it desperately needs a new paint job. (i'm going to paint it and then distress it so it still looks old! so excited!)
how can i get all these things for cheap and have it still look good?

Answers:
Hey. We had a really old dresser that was really nice but it was an awful color because it was so old. My husband sanded it down and then we put a coat of primer on it and painted it white and pink (like one that I saw in a kids decorating magazine) It turned out so good. and wasnt expensive at all. Everyone compliments it and you can find knobs at Home Depot or Lowe's or if you want to spend the extra money, you can find some that are really cute on ebay! Good luck!

http://www.paxtonhardware.com is a good site to find reproduction antique handles. You can also buy an antiquing (sp?) kit at Walmart or Lowe's that will do exactly what you're trying to do

good luck
Knobs-check yardsales/fleamarkets, etc

paint-check with the paint store for mistints/mistakes. most stores keep a section of paint that was mixed to the wrong color, and sell it CHEAP-usally a couple dollars for a gallon, may $1 for a quart.

good luck
sand it down coat it three time with stainer then coat it two time with polyurethane
There are no cheap ways to restore furniture. The knobs themselves will be $50.
I agree on buying mis-mixed paints for cheap. However, if you are going to distress it, you will want to use flat paint, not semi-gloss (satin is okay). And, I've found that most of the paint in the mis-mixed bins is semi-gloss or gloss as it was paint people were buying to go on the wall.

Knobs will cost you from $1 on up to $5 each if you go to a hardware store. Finding a set of them used (with you needing 14) is going to be hard, but you can find new ones that look old.
