How to build non-structural ceiling beams?

Question:want to put some ceiling beams across my den for appearance only.

Answers:
Before you go to all that trouble, check your home centers. They make beams out of styrofoam that really look great. They are light and easy to put up.

Against the ceiling - where you want the beam:

run a sub-board (material that will be covered) -

maybe a 2X4 - you must take into consideration the weight of the total materials for the entire project and how to fasten this material securely.

"wrap" the three sides of the above material in any fashion or style you want . . . some people want the beam to look like one piece . . . so . . . the edges are cut to a 45 degree angle and fit snugly so as to appear as one . . . some people make the 'bottom' wider than the side(s) . . . some times the side hangs lower than the 'bottom" . . . with these questions in mind, look at pictures in magazines, find the different looks, and choose one.

(make a crude drawing and 'work' on some of the details. make a small sample and hold it up to get an idea)
