Can anyone explain the process of whitewashing my hardwood floors?

Use a good quality stain, then finish the floor with two coats of a clear polyurethane floor varnish.

I think it would be better to put a limed oak stain on them rather than using whitewash. Then finish them with varnish or laquer.
