How do i remove glass from window for replacement?
Question:I have what I think is aluminum windows. looking at the window it has 2 sections, the top half and bottom half, bottom half being the part you slide to open. each half has six sections, pieces of glass divided by strips. I need to replace one piece and cannot figure how to remove the damaged one. I have gone over all the edges with a "blade" to remove any seal but it still doesn't budge. There are pieces on the exterior side that appear to "frame" the glass and possibly hold it in place, it doesn't look like any form of putty, it looks like plastic. I need to find out what that is and If i need to remove it and should i be able to reuse it.
Answers:
If the material is plastic the glass is secured one of two ways. 1- It may be a push-on strip. You can determine this by looking where the corners meet. If each pane has 4 strips you should be able to carefully pry them off with a thin putty knife. Plastic does get brittle after a while so go slowly. There also may be some glue between the stop and glass. You may have to slide a utility knife blade in this area to loosen.
2- The plastic might be a u shaped channel that goes around on both sides. If this is the case, use the utility knife procedure but it may be impossible to get the new piece in.
really carefully lol
You need to pull out the entire window unit and take it down to the glass company. Look around for tiny screws. I have been doing household repairs professionally for over 30 years, and refuse to do an in home glass replacement on aluminum windows. That is one time when the extra $5 is cheap insurance.
