How do I fix a window that won't stay up?

Question:My window is a removable window, which I believe is "vinyl". I am not very familiar with windows but I know that it is the type that has plastic or vinyl material (as opposed to wood) and it is removable by using two tabs on the top of the window. Recently, the window has stopped holding up on its own. In an attempt to fix this, I removed it and realized that the two metal pieces that I BELIEVE are responsible for keeping the window up are not connected to the two parts that the window actually connects to to stay in the frame. Is there a way to fix this or is this not the problem?

Answers:
prop it open with a stick!

Usually there are little slots in the window frame that the two metal pieces (located near the bottom of the window on either side) snap in to and you can hold it up or down certain heights.
id4 is pretty close. The things on the side are called balances. at the end of the balance you have the brackett thing your talking about. take a big screwdriver that fits the hole and pull down on it.. it should move somewhat easy and get tighter as you go down. if it doesnt move, its in the locked position. once you pull down you can turn the screwdriver and it will lock it. pull the other down same way but stop about 6" above the other height. insert one side of the window into and then the other side.. you might have to hit up or down on the window to get the metal lined up for the other side. unless you have the newer windows that the window just raises up when both are even. these types of windows dont have the U-shaped metal bracket.
Easiest and quickest way to solve this problem is to find a 1/2 inch wooden dowel and prop it open then call the manufacturer and ask.
Hometech is right on this one. If you have any sort of problem solving skills you should be able to read what he wrote and then fix your windows.
