Help! Floor prep disaster!?

Question:My husband and I are trying to install peel-and-stick tiles in our kitchen/laundry. The existing floor is sheet vinyl with some texture, installed over vinyl asbestos tile, so we can't remove it. We used an embossing leveler (Henry Patch and Skimcoat) mixed with latex additive. That stuff is awful! It became thick in minutes, making a smooth application impossible. Once we got started, we couldn't stop. Now we have bumps, lumps and ridges all over our floor. What do we do now? Can it be sanded down? Should we hire someone to add another thin layer of skimcoat? Can anybody recommend someone in the Houston area to fix our mess for not too much money? Suggestions, please!

Answers:
You should be able to sand it, but it will take a long time to smooth it out. You can also use the same compound to fill in some areas. Work in smaller areas. Mix small amounts. When the leveling compound starts to set, use a wide blade scraper to remove the ridges. A 6 inch drywall taping knife works good.

You should be able to sand it down and patch with latex patch.
It sounds like you're going from one disaster to another. The best thing would be to get someone in to remove all the layers back to the bare floor. Then start again
go ahead & remove old vinyl... just don't grind it up & inhale it, or remove it in such a way that it becomes airborne dust!

it's completely safe
Vinyl sheet flooring can come up no problem. It's the asbestos underneath you wanna watch. I dont know about sanding it. Sounds like you need a professional apprasial. Call a couple contractors have em come out and tell you what they can do for you. If you ask them to do something specific they'll give you a price for that. If you ask em what to do instead you'll get a much better answer.
Yes it can be sanded down. I would sand it down as level as you can get it. Then try to get some Ardex Feather finish portland cement. It comes in small 10 lb bags at flooring supply stores.
It goes on extremely smooth and has ample working time. The ardex can also be sanded lightly after it dires for a really smooth floor. It also will promote better stick from your self stick tiles.
Have fun.
not too much money is how you got in this mess in the first place. you probably bought you cheap *** stick on tile at home of the desperate. hahahahaha. you get what you pay for. pay to fix it. what ever the cost or youll spend twice as much as you wanted to in the fist place
