How to make hole in wood?

Question:I want to make a 1inch radius hole in the back of a cupboard, what tool do i need to do that?

Answers:
You will need a hole saw. You can get them in differing dimensions that fit on the end power drill. Where to find this animal is at Harbor Frieght (the cheapest selection), Home Depot, Lowes and other home improvement stores. Simply mount the hole cutter on the end of the drill, secure it with the drill chuck and find the center of the hole you want to drill and fire your engine!

Radius of 1 inch would indicate a 2 inch diameter hole(circle).
if you mean a 1" circle (hole) the least expensive tool would be a 1" spade bit. Use this in any electric, cordless drill, or even the old brace and bit. If you mean truly a 1" radius (2" diameter hole) you will need a hole saw bit 2" and this can be operated in the same tools.
You would need a drill bit of some sort with a 2" diameter. Holesaws, spade bits and forstner bits would all work. Holesaws and spadebits leave a rough edge on the hole, while a forstner bit leaves a cleaner hole. Beware: A 2" diameter bit has high torque, and if you are not careful it can slam the drill motor out of your hands or slam your hands into the side of the cabinet or other nearby surfaces. I have even seen a 250 lb. man thrown by a 2 1/2" hole saw in a powerful drill (he completely left the ground and landed 3' away.) Now that bit selection has been taken care of you must proceed to drill motor selection. Drill motors are either corded or cordless, the choice is up to you. Cordless tend to have less torque than a corded drill, so they are less likely to injure you, but they will likely take longer to drill the hole. Or, you could use a brace to turn the bit. this would give you the highest amount of torque in the safest package but it takes the most muscle.
When it comes to drilling really big holes for locksets or plumbing pipes, reach for a hole saw. A hole saw is a steel cylinder with saw teeth cut into the top edge. Hole saws are readily available at hardware stores and home centers for as little as $5 and work with a standard 3/8-in. drill.

You need a hand drilling machine. If one one inch radius hole is required you need a 2'' holesaw which will be available in all hardware store.
Get a drill, borrow if possible. You could either buy a hole-saw bit, or a paddle bit. The Paddle bit will be much cheaper and easier to use, but may chip away at the sides of the hole. A hole-saw will leave a cleaner cut, but as previously mentioned, is a little more expensive.

You should make your decision based on how often you think you will use it. If it's a one time use, get the paddle bit. You're looking at $5 or so for it.
There is a tool that is round and hollow that also has teeth on it for making larger holes then the norm. Almost looks like a steak knife that has been bent around. My husband uses his attached to his drill. It is called a "hole saw".
empirical knowledge is the best.
