What is a good way to clean our window A/C units?

Question:

Answers:
unplug and pull the unit. take it outside and gently rinse the inside and outside coils with a hose. The force of the hose can bend the fins, so be gentle and do not spray sideways, just straight on. Be careful of the electrical components. Let it drain for a while and dry off outside. It can be replaced and plugged in.

If you cannot pull the unit, a soft brush can be used to brush the fins in the direction they run. Do not brush across them, as you will bend them over.

You can also spray down the coils with a very weak solution of soapy water; 1/2 teaspoon in 1 gallon of water, in a spray bottle or garden sprayer.

Keep Kool

Inside Coil, turn off unit and use a spary bottle like Windex or other type of spay cleaner like Mr. Clean and spray starting from the bottom spraying across working your way up and the dirt will slide down the coil, then use another bottle with clean water and rinse it clean by repeating the spray starting at the top and working down, once clean poor some bleach in the drain to keep the drain clean. Now go out side and use a garden hose with a spray nozzle and spray into the back of the coil and watch the dirt pour out, and that's it your coils will be now clean and ready to go back to work. Hope this helps
The tips already given are good. Most importantly- unplug it first! If you are not in a situation where rinsing is convenient you can also use a non-rinse coil cleaning spray like A/C Safe's foaming product: http://www.appliancepartsworldwide.com/s...

It also helps to clean and straighten the outside fins with a fin comb: http://www.appliancepartsworldwide.com/s... The fin comb will make the unit more efficient by providing more surface area for heat transfer (when they're bent or clogged this is hampered).
